Violife Creamy voted No. 1

We love our Violife Creamy and we know plant-based cream cheese alternative lovers love it too. When we speak to consumers, we hear there are other great products out there, including Philadelphia Plant Based. Violife Creamy or Philadelphia Plant Based, that is the question. It’s quite the debate amongst plant-based cream cheese alternative lovers! We think we’re number one, but we wanted to test this by asking people to rate various attributes of both products to help put the debate to rest. So, we hired an independent agency to conduct a blind taste test between Violife Creamy or Philadelphia Plant Based, and here are the results.

A bit of background about the research:

  • ISI Sensory Futures (Institut für Sensorikforschung und Innovationsberatung GmbH) set up a blind taste test to understand consumer preference of cream cheese and plant-based cream cheese alternatives.

Who did we conduct the research with?

  • Following a pre-screening selection process, only those that had consumed cream cheese (or plant-based alternatives) at least once in the last 3 months were selected to take part.

  • Those who took part were in the following age brackets: 18-34 / 35-50 / 51-65 (each 33%).

  • We conducted the research at two site locations: London and Birmingham in May 2024.

  • In total there were 250 cream cheese consumers; 60% of whom were dairy cream cheese consumers; 40% identified as flexitarians, avoiding dairy, plant curious or vegan.

So, what did they have to do exactly during the blind taste tests?

  • Consumers tasted different varieties of cream cheese through sequential monadic methodology. This means that every consumer taste the same variety of samples, but in a different random order to prevent bias. They tested one product at a time and they each had to answer the same questions about what they tried.

  • They were given samples [20-30g] with untoasted white bread to taste in a blind taste test and then asked various questions.

Here are the questions we asked respondents after tasting each sample:

  • Taking everything into consideration, what is your overall opinion of the product that you just have tasted? (answering a 10-point scale from 1 (dislike extremely) to 10 (like extremely))

  • Based on the product you just tried, which statement below best describes how you feel about buying the product? (would definitely not buy / probably would not buy / undecided / probably would buy / would definitely buy)

So….what did the results say? Was Violife Creamy voted No. 1?
